人工社会を構築してagent-basedなアプローチでモデリングを行うことについての，解説論文．
この手法やアプローチには，これこれこういう長所があって，こういうことができる可能性がありますよ，というのを示してくれる．
この場合には，agent-basedなモデリングが，micro-macro
linkを包含したモデルの構築を可能にして，ミクロの挙動とマクロの振舞いの関係について分析が可能になることを示してくれている．
これは社会科学や社会学の領域の従来手法では，手法的なスコープの問題から，完全に無理であるとされていたので，その意味で非常に大きな可能性があるで
しょうとのこと．
agentの定義．
AI系のひとによるわりかしニュートラルな定義だと思う．
Recently renewed attempts have been made around the worldここでのexisting organization
to combine these techniques into agents: entities that can receive or
collect information, assess it in the light of their past experience,
and decide what action to take.

theoryってのは実証研究中心のいわゆる経営学領域に入る組織論というのを指すと思う．
引用文の趣旨は確かにそうだが，この後の歴史の流れとして，agent-basedなモデリングによるアプローチにより組織論への反動的な研究が行われる
ことで，その手法的ポテンシャルを活かした，目的としてあるべき理論構築にフォーカスした研究がなされていないことが問題としてあげられる．
というのが，僕の問題意識．
Existing organization theory offers many insights into
organizational design and redesign (e.g., [13]) but typically seems too
controversial and too generalised to do much to help with specific
decisions in specific circumstances. Yet humans seem to cope. We
commonly feel that we can judge whether or not a particular change to
an organization's structure (e.g., should these two committees be
merged) will be beneficial.

先日の研究計画発表のときにも感じたのだけど，工学系のセンセにはこの辺の話はわかりかねるところがあるのかもしれない．
モデルの構築にはいろいろと目的があって，対象に対しての理解を深めることも，モデル構築の目的になりうるということ．さらにいえば，それ自体でそれなりの研究の意義があるということ．

understand more about the target? To optimise the target? To verify a
design for the target?

あー，これは身にしみるご指摘だ．気をつけなければならない．
が，発表においては適切な言い回しに言いかえるとして，論文中においてはやっぱり定義をしっかりとするくらいしか，対処の方法が考えつかないのだが．
Of course, presenting such conclusions in ordinary language
can easily be misleading if we do not keep clearly in mind that just
what a conclusion means, and the evidence for it, depends upon
precisely what meaning the various terms used in its statement (e.g.,
"unbiased,""task environment,""team") were given in the computer
experiments.

日本はともかく，欧米のほうの研究者のかたの繋がりとかについては不勉強なので，よくわかりかねますが．
Artificial societies are not fascinating toy worlds there-----
to be played with, nor are they "just" promising ways to solve
practical problems. Rather, they are an experimental means of
discovering significant mathemetical theorems that link micro-level
conditions to emergent macro-level outcomes in social domains.
